Welcome!

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Welcome to carternedley.org, home of The Carter Nedley Foundation! We’re still getting a lot of things up and running — including much of the site — so please bear with us.

In the meantime, I thought I’d share with you our plans for the Foundation and the site, and invite your feedback.

We’ve started the homepage as a blog to report on our work, make announcements, share stories from friends, etc. But we’ll be adding extra pages shortly to discuss in more detail the following:

1. Mission: Our chief aim is to serve children in Northeast Ohio affected by cancer, along with their families. Having spent nearly an entire year living in hospitals, even the smallest gesture from the outside world — and there were plenty — was appreciated. But when those gestures were made expressly for our son, battling every day for his life, they were cherished. Children fighting cancer are the bravest of all human beings, and we think there’s no better way to recognize their courage than to celebrate it.

Looking more long-term, our secondary goals are to raise funds for pediatric cancer research and to advocate for issues relevant to the treatment of pediatric cancer, primarily cord-blood donation and marrow-donor registration.

2. Events: We’ve already launched a Spring-themed gourmet candy fundraiser locally, and hope to announce plans soon for additional events such as a golf outing, meal fundraisers, etc. We’re designing a “Carter’s Crew” t-shirt to wear to every local athletic or cancer-related outdoor event in which we participate (RiteAid Cleveland Marathon, Light the Night, The CureSearch Walk). We hope you’ll join us.

3. Carter’s Story: You’ll be able to read about our hero’s life, and his inspirational battle with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

4. The Carter Nedley Memorial Fund: We’ll share information about an endowment established in memory of Carter by The Menorah Park Foundation to support its excellent child-care center, FUNdamentals.

5. Links: And lots of ’em.

Just some broad strokes for now. We’ll detail them all more when we upload the extra pages. Thank you for visiting. Take care.
