Ice Cream to the Rescue!

August 24th, 2010 by jnedley

We’ve been awful busy planning The Carter Nedley Golf Classic. Maybe too busy. We almost forgot that it had been nearly two months since Father’s Day, when we brought bagels to the patients, families, and staff at The Cleveland Clinic.

The timing for a return was fortuitous, what with the Clinic’s recent ban on the sale of sugary foods. Sweets and sodas can be smuggled in, of course, but now are practically extinct from the vending machines and the food court. Gonna make it a little tough for a parent to find their hospitalized child that occasional treat, when he or she wants one.

So on August 10th, Lisa and Grandma Karlene took action. They packed the two biggest coolers they could find with four gallons of delicious ice cream, bought a bunch of mylar balloons, and smuggled in an entire ice-cream party!

Our team arrived safely, then spent a few pleasant hours making sundaes for the patients, their families, and the staff at the pediatric-oncology inpatient unit and pediatric hematology/oncology day clinic. They came armed with toppings, too: Mini Chips Ahoy, Mini Oreos, sprinkles, whipped cream, and chocolate sauce.

You’re welcome, everyone. Remember that you’re the reason we do what we do. We’ll be back for Halloween.
